Stamford, CT - Penton Media’s 2010 Global Waste Management Symposium (GWMS), an international forum for the presentation of peer-reviewed applied and fundamental research and case studies on waste management is pleased to present  Dr. Christensen discussing how waste management in Europe has for decades been governed by the waste hierarchy, but statistics show that the 27 different member states represent a wide range of approaches. Many countries still rely strongly on landfilling, while other countries have reduced landfilling of MSW to less than 5%. With this knowledge, a generic study was performed using a modeling approach that compared 40 different waste management systems as they could appear in Europe in the future. The results showed that the most rational waste management scenarios can lead to substantial savings in CO2-emissions per tonne of municipal waste.

“Dr. Christensen is well-respected and renowned for his research on solid waste issues affecting the world.  His most recent work, which shows how solid waste management strategies can have profound effects on greenhouse gas emissions, is very relevant to carbon management policy being implemented or considered by many countries today” noted Dr. Bryan Staley, co-chair of the GWMS technical committee. The Global Waste Management Symposium brings together a broad coalition of government agencies, waste services companies, consultants, vendors/suppliers, researchers and leading trade organizations and scientific foundations from the U.S. and abroad.    Participants will have the opportunity to share ideas and problem solve with colleagues and GWMS sponsors on topics that are critical to the community of designers, facility owners and operators, policymakers and researchers in the global waste community.

Supported by Penton Media’s Waste Age Magazine, GWMS also enjoys media support from the following Media Partners to date: Construction & Demolition Recycling, Pollution Equipment News and Geosynthetica.net. Additional support is provided by the following Strategic Partners to date: the Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF), the Environmental Industry Associations (EIA, through NSWMA and WASTEC), the Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) and Methane to Markets (M2M), the Chicago Climate Exchange, LowCarbonEconomy.com, and the Ontario Waste Management Association.
