Ecuador raised Tuesday to the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues a proposal to combat climate change that would prevent the exploitation of an oil reservoir located in the Yasuni National Park.
Yolanda Kakabadse, a member of the Committee established by President Rafael Correa to design and promote this initiative, said it would involve the sale of certificates for avoiding emitting CO2.
He clarified that the benefits would be multiple since 1000 the country will generate millions of dollars more than the revenue received by the oil price today.
"So the sale of carbon credits is still more advantageous, but also is advantageous because we are not destroying one of the estates, the wealth of Ecuador, the Yasuni National Park."
Kakabadse added that Germany and United Kingdom have already expressed interest in the proposal.
