August
2008
The governments of Peru and the United States signed in Lima the V
memorandum of understanding to advance cooperation on renewable and clean
energy sources. The document was signed by Minister of Energy and Mines,
architect Juan Valdivia Romero and the U.S. Embassador, P. Michael McKinley.
The Officer of Energy and Mines thanked the cooperation of the U.S.
government through the document, that he said - commits Peru and
particularly the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) in the development of
clean energy. He also highlighted the presence on the national stage of
the brand new Ministry
of Environment, whose officer, Antonio Brag Eg, also participated in the
act.
The Minister also considers that the new memorandum will enable Peru
to develop new methods or technologies since our country will be assisted by
technicians of high quality and great experience.
"Peru has a commitment to the welfare of its people, to increase
sustainable investment, to achieve an industry that takes care of the
environment and protect the rights of communities and give people new development
alternatives," he said.
We will be working together so that what we started today will be
successful and we can say, in a short time, "task accomplished," he said.
For his part, the U.S. Embassador expressed the honour to sign the
document and argued that access to energy is essential for development,
employment promotion and technological advancement.
The memorandum provides the framework for further bilateral
cooperation that we already enjoy or to promote energy security through
greater use of cleaner and renewable energies. Promoting energy efficiency
will keep the environment, promote the general welfare of the population
and reduce our dependence on traditional energy.
At the same time- he added-through this instrument we recognize the
importance of promoting biofuels in harmony with sustainable development
and food security.
Guided by this MOU we will not only improve the exchange and research
in the development of renewable and cleaner energy but we'll also promote
private sector investment and the incorporation of cleaner fuels.
Cooperation under this MOU begins today and we already have several
activities planned. Tomorrow a representative will come to Lima to
discuss standards for ethanol and for diesel.
We will be offering, along with valuable agencies, the Peruvian
Government and the NGO Conservation International, conferences on
sustainable development of biofuels and we'll also send several Peruvian
government officials and representatives of civil society to the
United States, for exchange on these issues through programs like the
International Visitors and, later, we will bring other presenters of
the United States for events and exchanges, as well as trade delegations,
with the cooperation of academia, the private sector and civil society we
hope soon we'll have the best results of this agreement of intent to obtain
cleaner and more sustainable energy .
