Chile: Endesa Eco submits environmental impact declaration for the Canela II wind-generation plant
12  May  2008

The new wind farm will be located on land adjoining that of Canela, currently operating, and will comprise 46 wind generators with an installed capacity of 69 MW.

Endesa Eco last week submitted the environmental impact declaration (EID) of the Canela II project to the Coquimbo regional environmental commission (Corema) through the company Central Eólica Canela S.A. This new wind-generation project contemplates the installation of 46 wind generators with an installed capacity of 69 MW and an average annual generation of 180.1 GWh.

Endesa Chile’s subsidiary for the development of non-conventional renewable energy (NCRE) entered the environmental impact evaluation system (EIES) of the Coquimbo Corema with the Canela II EID, an initiative that permits the expansion of the Canela wind farm which since December 2007 has been contributing 18.15 MW to the central electricity grid (SIC).

According to the EID, the estimated investment in this project amounts to US$ 168 million and contemplates the development of a new wind farm to be located to the south of Canela I, on 1,082 hectares of land. The construction period is expected to last 17 months, during which 46 wind generators will be installed, each 79 meters tall and with an average speed of 15 rpm.

Canela II will also take advantage of the control room of the currently-operating farm and the proximity of the existing Los Vilos – Pan de Azúcar transmission line for the energy generated. The connection to the SIC will be by a section-switch substation which will permit the direct delivery of energy to the grid.
