| Argentina: Afforestation to fight climate change 21
February
2008
During the "Workshop on Strengthening Forest CDM in Argentina", organized by the Ministry of Environment's Office and the Japanese Cooperation Agency JICA, technicians of the agency, together with representatives of INTA, the Centre for Research and Extension Forestry Patagonia and Secretariat staff will share experiences for two days and diagnostics on afforestation in Argentina as a method for the capture of Carbon Dioxide (CO2), referred to the Kyoto Protocol, such as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Forestry.
The meeting will serve as a means of exchange of successful experiences between Latin America and Japan.
The CDM is aimed at carrying out projects that contribute to sustainable development in developing countries. This is the only mechanism that involves developing countries allowing the marketing of credits earned as a counterpart for the capture of greenhouse gases (GHG's)
The CDM Forest, promoted afforestation and reforestation of tracts of land that allows the capture of CO2, thus cushioning the impact that it generates as a greenhouse gas (GHG's), giving the possibility to obtain by this catch bonds carbon, which are traded on the market, through a procedure that emerged from from the Kyoto Protocol.
There are, at present, 20 million hectares of land to afforest potential in our country, which represents a great potential for the implementation of projects relating to the Clean Development Mechanism, in the area of afforestation and reforestation (CDM / R) .
With these fundamentals, the Directorate for Climate Change Portfolio national environmental asked the International Cooperation Agency of Japan (JICA), development of a technical assistance project for the promotion and strengthening of forestry projects for the capture of CO2, under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
Proceeds from the joint work between representatives of the Japanese government and various government agencies in Argentina, formalized the project began in October 2007 and continued for two years.
The ultimate purpose of the project is to encourage afforestation and reforestation activities under the CDM in Argentina.
Participation in this project, apart from the Secretariat of Environment, the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) and the Centre for Research and Extension Forestry Patagonia (CIEFAP) with the cooperation of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food the Ministry of Economy.
