GIS Hands On Training Course - Atlantic Rainforest Brazil

monthly , March -July 2005

The Iracambi Research Center in Minas Gerais, Brazil, is pleased to offer a series of 19 day hands-on GIS courses between March and July 2005. The course is designed for people who are familiar with the idea of a Geographic Information System, but who have never had hands on experience. No previous knowledge of GIS is expected: during the course, you will learn to: · Understand the role of GIS in conservation/land use planning ; · Collect and enter data using the GPS; · Interpret and map the data you have collected. . Use aerial photography to assist in mapmaking. The course is closely related to our work in conservation planning. Students will select the most critical resources in the conservation area and decide how they can best be protected. GIS training can equally be applied to other fields: in public health planning to map critical areas of health risks, in biological inventory work, in demographic planning – in short, in any situation where geographic data is used. All theoretical work will be reinforced by fieldwork. This field work will feed into our own GIS system which forms the basis for land management/conservation planning in the local area.
