Creating and Using Wetlands for Wastewater Disposal and Water Quality Improvement

Mississauga, Ontario, Canada

DESCRIPTION

One of the important elements of wastewater treatment schemes, particularly those that involve lagoons, is the engineered wetland. Wetlands offer an effective, natural, and cost-effective means of final waste treatment. However, the drainage and filling of wetlands has produced serious environmental problems such as increased surface water degradation, loss of wildlife habitat, and depletion of general water resources.

This course assists you in addressing these problems. It will introduce you to current approaches to the creation and management of wetlands for wastewater disposal and improvement of water quality, while mitigating any negative impacts on the surrounding environment. Among the topics you consider are classification of wetlands; hydrological, chemical and biological processes; pollutant reduction mechanisms; nutrient reduction; and wetland design principles.

OBJECTIVES

To impart practical knowledge of wetland pollutant reduction processes, design principles and applications.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Environmental, wastewater, civil and municipal engineers; biologists and environmental scientists; and soil engineers and hydrogeologists will all benefit by attending this seminar.
