Safe Water 2006

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, October 23-25, 2006

Through VISION 21, the world community hopes by 2025 to have achieved a universal access to hygiene, sanitation and water services. At Boreholes, we believe that this goal could only be attained through increased global awareness on the magnitude of the problem and finding regional solutions.

The Safe Water 2006 International Conference in Rio de Jeneiro, Brazil, titled Safe Water and Health: Protecting Watersheds in South America will focus on protecting the watersheds in South America while addressing the impacts of the lack of access to safe water on public health. Our success report of the Oguta Lake Watershed Protection Capacity Building Initiative and the report on Rio das Velhas Project will be presented at this conference.

Participating agencies and institutions from previous International Safe Water conferences included: Natural Resources Conservation Services-United States Department of Agriculture, Proctor and Gamble, SCRIPPS Institute of Oceanography, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Region IV), National Council for Science and the Environment, Global Institute for Energy and Environmental Systems, University of North Carolina, Charlotte, Rotary International, GEO Resources Institute, Medentech Ltd., Population Services International, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Division of International Affairs and Development, United Negro College Fund, John Hopkins University, Florida A&M University, U.S. EPA Washington, DC, Clark Atlanta University, University of Illinois, Michigan State University, Rural Community Assistant Partnership, Spelman College, Tuskegee University, Washington DC Water Resources DC Water Resources Institute, Savannah State University, Central State University, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Regenesis, Chlorine Chemistry Council, Cleveland Forest Services, Indiana University, Alcon State University, local farmers, community leaders, and faculty members from over 50 academic institutions.

To ensure a broad input and real practical solutions from the participants, this conference will strongly encourage sponsorships from industries. Reports, statements, viewpoints, opinions, review articles and technical papers will be reviewed and published as part of the conference proceedings. Selected peer-reviewed articles will be published in a peer-review Journal. Projeto Manuelzão, a non-profit organization, whose mission is to save Rio das Velhas in Brasil, Boreholes, Inc., a non-profit organization, whose mission is to ensure that rural communities of the world have access to safe drinking water, University Federal of Minas Gerais, and COPPE/ University Federal of Rio de Janeiro are the host of this International Conference.

Safe water 2006 has the support of International Society for Environmental Geotechnology - ISEG – South America, and Clube de Engenharia do Rio de Janeiro.
