1st UITP Sustainable Development Conference
Bilbao Sapin 18-20 October 2006
UITP launched its Sustainable Development Charter in 2003 with 33 pioneer signatories.
Today over 100 UITP members from across the globe have signed up to this voluntary,
measurable commitment to incorporate sustainable development into their organisations.
This is the first UITP international conference dedicated to covering all the different
aspects of sustainable development, clearly demonstrating the environmental, social and
economic advantages of the sustainability approach, and the contribution and role of the
public transport sector.
The programme will be highly interactive and delegates will gain valuable practical knowledge
by participating. It will bring diverse best practices and case studies from all over the world
to the forefront.
In addition, the opinion and expectations of the youth – the leaders of the
future - will be expressed during the conference via an international youth delegation.
UITP charter signatories and industry members will also be able to showcase their good practices and
the implementation of new, environmentally sustainable technologies for the public transport
sector in a poster zone allowing greater depth discussions with participants.
The city of Bilbao is the ideal location for this UITP conference as it is has the 21st century
in mind. It is the economic and industrial centre as well as the new cultural capital of
north-western Spain.
Since 1992, there has been a vast programme of urban renewal making it one
of the most ‘in’ places to visit in Spain.
New, daring architecture and the fully accessible Metro Bilbao, local host to this event is central to this urban redevelopment. The polished outline of the Guggenheim Museum (1997), within walking distance or a short metro ride of the “Euskalduna Congress Centre” where the conference will be held, has become a monumental motif of the city.
New bridges, public art installations along the river side and the metro have improved the quality of life for all citizens of Bilbao.
Attending this event will allow you to gain an in-depth understanding of how sustainable
development has gone from an abstract concept to a total management approach.
You will see first-hand how leading cities and public transport organizations are incorporating sustainable
principles into their management processes and the positive results that this brings.
